Lentil Traits Search
Lentil's produce pods usually containing two lens-shaped seeds. The seeds go through a number of processing steps to ready them for market known as milling. The milling recovery is the percentage of total milled seed recovered from the milling process and includes both split seeds and footballs (whole seeds having cotyledons attachaed). Milling efficiency is one indicator of Lentil quality along with colour, size and condition of split seeds or footballs (Lentil Production Manual, n.d.).

The number of nodes on the primary stem at anthesis stage (R1). At this stage, lentil plants start to have the first open flower, this can appear at any node (Erskine, Muehlbauer, & Short, 1990). R1 indicates the beginning of the reproductive growth stage (Erskine, Muehlbauer, & Short, 1990).

Plant biomass is the wet weight of the lentil plant including both above and below ground plant material. Due to an indeterminate growth habit, lentil plants often continue to flower as long as growing conditions remain favourable for vegitative growth (Saskatchewan Ministry Agriculture & University of Saskatchewan, 2017).

The peduncle is a stalk supporting an inflorescence (group/cluster of flowers). The number of pods per peduncle is determined when the pod is swollen and normally varies from one to four (Erskine et al., 2009).

The length between days till plants have one open flower and days till plants mature.
The weight of all seed collected from a single lentil plant and can be used to estimate the crop yield. The seed mass is dependant upon a number of environmental conditions including moisture level with seed weight decreasing with a decrease in moisture content (Tang et al., 1990).
