Genetic characterization of nitrogen fixation related traits in three interspecific lentil populations

Extensive research has been conducted for estimating the agro-environmental contributions of the nitrogen fixing process, but research related to breeding for this ability is lacking. With the study of 3 interspecific recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations, inoculated with a top performing Rhizobium leguminosarum strain, we will have a better understanding of the inheritance of nitrogen fixing related traits. With the identification of QTL associated with nodulation characteristics, the specific regions of the wild and cultivated genome associated with nodulation traits will be identified allowing breeders to develop strategies to access variability from wild lentil species.
